With spring right around the corner, it’s almost time to breathe new life into your home. After being cooped up inside all winter long, we can finally change into our warmer-weather attire. Beyond wearing different apparel, the changing of seasons signifies a time of renewal, especially for the inside of your home. No matter how motivated you are, the idea of deep-cleaning your home from top to bottom isn’t always the easiest experience. Here are some tips to conquer your spring cleaning this year:
Step 1: Blast Your Favorite Tunes
Before you grab all your cleaning gear and set out on this major task, it’s important that you set the mood by blasting your favorite tunes. The Power of Listening to Music feeds the soul, and most importantly gets your juice flowing so you can scrub-a-dub-dub in no time. Research shows that certain types of music can help you reach an alpha state, becoming more productive. Cue up your favorite playlist, or make one for this special spring cleaning!
Step 2: Only Do One Room at A Time
Although you may want to dust all the lampshades in each room or vacuum every floor in the house, it’s best to focus on one room at a time so that you can break each area into a little project of its own. We suggest starting from the biggest room of the house and taking on the hardest project first so that each room gets a little easier each time. If you and your family/friends spend the most time in the living room or dining room, begin cleaning in there! Otherwise, your bedroom is another great starting point.
Step 3: De-clutter Spaces
Over the winter season, several holidays swept us into hysteria and chaos, which can lead to cluttered spaces and over packed rooms. It’s no surprise that all your Christmas gifts are stored in a pile in the garage, or even stacked up in an office or bedroom. The best thing you can do is grab a wastebasket, and collect everything that is misplaced or doesn’t belong in that area. You surely will notice the amount of stress that will shed off you when everything is finally where it should be.
Step 4: Clean Hard-To-Reach Spots
Hard-to-reach spots are often overlooked and rarely get the attention they need. Baseboards, crevices in the walls or cupboards, lampshades, fan blades, ceilings, window blinds, and so much more need special care this spring. If these spaces just have a light layer of dust, just wipe them down with a microfiber cloth or dryer sheet. For more soiled surfaces, a scrub down with soap and water may be the best option.
Step 5: Sweep & Mop
Once you’ve collected all the dust and dander from those hard-to-reach places, you need to sweep and mop for that extra clean environment. Don’t forget to target the area behind the toilet, underneath furniture and beds, as well as the pantry/closet floors.
Step 6: Sanitize Commonly Used Items
The most used items in your house need to be sanitized. This includes counters, faucets, doorknobs, handles, and remotes. They build up bacteria, sweat, and dirt over time, and although you may not visibly see it, it’s definitely there.
Step 7: Downsize Your Wardrobe
This step may be a hard pill to swallow, but downsizing your wardrobe is one of the most therapeutic things one can do. If you’ve ever heard the phrase, “Out with the old and in with the new,” now is the time to practice that. Donate clothes that have collected dust, or ones that you have worn enough to feel comfortable letting go. Purging can be one of the most freeing feelings, and ultimately you’re being charitable with each donation.
