5 Ways to Strengthen the Lifespan of Your Phone Battery

Taking your phone out to make a call or take a picture, only to realize that your battery is dead, is arguably one of the worst feelings in the world. From texting to social media, and video-chatting to phone calls, you use your phone for multiple things. Some people even work solely on their phone, which requires them to make sure that it has juice every moment of the day.

Keeping your phone alive and energized can be quite a challenge, no matter what type of smartphone you have. Even though Apple and Google have increased the longevity of battery lifespans, we must make some changes to strengthen how long our batteries last.

Here are five ways to improve the lifespan of your phone battery throughout the day:
Avoid Extreme Temperatures

If you’ve ever taken your phone to the beach and left it in the sand for a couple of hours, you may have seen a temperature warning that says “Phone needs to cool down before you can use it". When your phone endures extremely hot temperatures, it can experience battery drain, forced shutdown, and even a total meltdown. The hardware on your phone is capable of melting, which has damaged beyond repair.

On the other hand, when your phone experiences extremely cold temperatures, the battery will also deplete sooner. Androids and iPhones aren't designed for cold temperatures below 32 degrees. They will get shut down, or lose charge quickly if you use them in harsh weather conditions. It is because most smartphones nowadays run on a Lithium-Ion battery. Lithium-Ion batteries require liquid electrolytes, which sit between the two types of electrodes in the battery that provide power. When Lithium-Ion batteries are exposed to extremely hot or cold temperatures, the liquid electrolytes stop working, reducing their ability to send energy to your phone.
Turn Off WiFi/Bluetooth/Assistant
When you are out and about in public, shopping at the grocery store, or walking around the mall, it is a good idea to turn off your WiFi and Bluetooth. Most importantly, if you have a bad signal or connection, disable cellular data or WiFi, So it is not continuously roaming.  If you leave these settings on when you are not using them, they scan for a nearby pairing, wasting battery life.
If you are an Android user, you must turn off the ‘Automatic WiFi’ setting. This feature still scans for networks even if you have turned your WiFi off. Another service you can let go of to preserve your battery life is your virtual assistant, Such as Siri. They are useful and convenient, but they waste battery waiting for voice commands. If you hardly use your assistant, you are not missing out by turning this feature off.
Manage Location Services
If you use Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, or other social media apps, many of them track your location to support their services. It means that your battery is draining while your phone scans for GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, and cell tower locations for maximum accuracy. To negate these actions, you can place restrictions on these apps so they can only access your location while you are using the app. If you have an iPhone or Android, check your settings for each app and manage your location services.
Restrict Apps that Waste Battery
In addition to location services, you can restrict app usage to strengthen the lifespan of your battery. Even though you can close out of the apps you used by scrolling them up and away, it does not improve your battery life, it makes it worse. If you didn’t already know this, get ready for a surprise. When you go from one app to the next, all apps used tend to perform background usage. You can see this data by going to your battery settings and turning off the background app refreshes. If you plan on using an app throughout your day, it is best not to close it out because opening an app uses more power than returning to an app that’s already running in the background. The key to preserving the battery means that you must turn off the background app refresh.
